* Texas A & M University

The Department of Mathematics at Texas A & M University will hire this year about 25 to 30 graduate students (master's and Ph.D).

1) The Ph.D. Progam

Ph.D. study is available in both pure and applied mathematics. Most fields of research are represented in the department by national leaders in their specialities. Our department has 75 permanent faculty members and 20 visiting professors. For a list see: http://www.math.tamu.edu/directory/faculty/fac_directory.html

Many of our research groups maintain web pages which are a good source of information about our activities. They are:

2) The Master's Program

Motivated by the increasing demand for mathematically skilled employees by industry and financial institutions, the Department of Mathematics has added three professional master's programs to our traditional one. Since their inception in 1993, each new program has graduated five to ten students per year, all of whom have gone on to successful careers. Here are the web sites for these programs:

3) Financial Support

The majority of graduate students in the Department of Mathematics receive financial support in the form of graduate assistantships throughout their graduate career. In the academic year 01/02 the base salary for an incoming graduate student was $1550 per month. Graduate students who have passed the qualifying examinations receive an additional $100 per month. Every Ph.D. student is supported for 12 months per year and every Master's student for 10.5 months per year. Our department has 16 stipends, eight of which are paid by the National Science Foundation, (VIGRE Grant) and the other eight by matching funds from the university. These stipends pay the usual graduate assistant salaries and no teaching duties are required. Highly qualified applicants are nominated by the department for nine and twelve month University Regents or Graduate Merit Fellowships in addition to graduate assistantships. These have annual stipends of up to $18,000 and reduced teaching duties. All applicants are automatically considered for all forms of financial support. Those seeking September admission with possible fellowship support are encouraged to complete their applications by February 15. Numerous opportunities exist for mathematics graduate students to obtain support as Graduate Research Assistants on faculty research contracts and grants. Graduate Research Assistantships can either involve specific duties associated with contract projects or can be more in the nature of fellowships without specific research duties. Graduate assistants qualify for in-state tuition and fees which total approximately $1500 per semester. Every graduate assistant qualifies for the university's health plan which typically pays the full cost of health insurance for a single person.

4) Special Fellowships

In order to recruit outstanding students the Department of Mathematics is offering 16 Special Fellowships during the next couple of years. Recipients of this fellowship do not have any duties during the first three years. Three of these fellowship are attached to the following distinguished members of our department:

5) How to apply

If you are interested in our program and you want to apply please ask for an "application package" at gstudies@math.tamu.edu

We also encourage you to fill out the application forms at http://www.math.tamu.edu/teaching/graduate

6) Workload

We keep the duties of our teaching assistants to under 10 hours per week including preparation time. Typically, a Ph.D. student will receive a research stipend (with no teaching duties) for at least two semesters. The duties that our teaching assistants usually perform are

To give our senior graduate students some teaching experience, we allow and encourage them to teach a class.
